The Battle of Britain, fought from July to October 1940, was an epic air campaign that led to the first military defeat of Germany in World War II and has become synonymous with defiantly defending one’s nation in the air.

The battle and gallant actions of the allied personnel involved were so crucial, they inspired Winston Churchill to famously declare ‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.’

Eight South Australian aircrew fought in the Battle of Britain – approximately one-quarter of the total number of Australians.
