In 1916, they acquired what is now prime land near Coolangatta, establishing a refuge where soldiers found solace before departing for war. By 1918, sheds were erected for wounded soldiers’ recovery, evolving into the Sailors and Soldiers Rest Home between the wars. In June 1954, St George’s Holiday House emerged, undergoing refurbishments until 1999. In 2015, demolition marked the transition to a modern facility, culminating in the Garland building’s opening in December 2016, housing self-contained Defence Holiday Suites on the lower floors. Now operated by the Service Personnel Help Society Ltd (SPAHS), this property, right near Snapper Rocks, offers contemporary self-contained accommodations.
