Centenary Celebration Honours WWII Veteran Graham Burgoyne

BATTLE OF BRITAIN ‘LACE’

The Nambour Branch of the Royal Australian Air Force Association (RAAFA) has come together to celebrate the 100th birthday of their respected Branch Patron and Life Member, Graham Burgoyne, a World War II veteran who served with No 24 Squadron under No 82 Wing in the South West Pacific Theatre.

Friends, family, RAAFA members and serving RAAF personnel gathered at a local venue to honour Mr Burgoyne’s remarkable life and service.

The celebration paid tribute to Mr Burgoyne’s enduring legacy, both as a serviceman and a leader within the Nambour Branch, where he has been recognised as a Life Member for his exemplary leadership.

The event saw strong representation from the RAAF, with the Air Commodore Peter Robinson CSM, Commander Air Combat Group (CDRACG), Group Captain Steven Thornton, Officer Commanding No 82 Wing and other members of No 82 Wing in attendance. A letter of congratulations from the Chief of Air Force was delivered to Mr Burgoyne by CDRACG, highlighting the significance of the occasion.

RAAFA Queensland was proudly represented by their Patron, Air Vice-Marshal David Dunlop CSC (Retd) and State President John Bushell, who described the event as a significant moment for the association.

“Graham’s service during World War II and his ongoing commitment to the Nambour Branch make this milestone truly special,” Mr Bushell said.

“The turnout from the Air Force and our members shows the deep respect we all have for him.”

The event was carefully organised by Nambour Branch Secretary Penny Wilson, who coordinated invitations, venue arrangements, menus, and liaison with Mr Burgoyne’s family, friends and the Kawana Branch.

Ms Wilson’s efforts ensured a smooth celebration, complete with a specially designed cake and warm tributes from attendees. David Willcox AM, CSC, a retired Group Captain and friend of Mr Burgoyne, served as the Master of Ceremonies, bringing a personal touch to the proceedings.

“This birthday tribute was about celebrating Graham as a caring mentor and friend,” Mr Willcox said. “His influence on so many of us, both in and out of uniform, is profound. This day was about showing our gratitude for his century of service and wisdom.”

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli was unable to attend but was represented by the Member for Nicklin, Mr Marty Hunt, who conveyed the state’s admiration for Mr Burgoyne’s contributions. Just weeks prior, Mr Burgoyne had been pictured with the Premier at the VP80 Commemoration, highlighting his continued involvement in community and veteran events.
