The ADF Firefighter Scheme Has Now Commenced

A financial and health support scheme for ADF Firefighters who served at the RAAF Base Point Cook Fire Training School between 1957 and 1986, commenced on 20 September 2021.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) has received 245 pre-registrations and sent 244 responses and is pleased with the early response from interested veterans, which enabled DVA to begin an early look at Service Records to confirm eligibility under the Scheme.

From 20 September 2021, interested veterans and eligible dependents will not be required to submit pre-registrations.

The AFD Firefighter Scheme as it is known, followed extensive lobbying for over 2 years by the AFA to obtain recognition for firefighters exposed to a wide range of hazardous substances during their time at the former Fire Training School during this period.

AFA President Carl Schiller said, “The AFA is very pleased that ADF firefighters who served during this time will receive the support they need and deserve. We are grateful to Department of Veterans’ Affairs for providing a remedy for these veterans.”
