BATTLE OF BRITAIN ‘LACE’
The service and sacrifice of approximately 10,000 Royal Australian Air Force personnel who served in RAF Bomber Command during the Second World War have been commemorated at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
Marking the 85th anniversary of the first RAAF squadron operations with Bomber Command, the ceremony remembered the 4,149 Australians killed while serving – more than one in three of those who served, representing 20 per cent of Australia’s total combat losses in the war.
The ceremony opened with a welcome address by Mr Matt Anderson PSM, Director of the Australian War Memorial, followed by a commemorative address by Air Vice-Marshal John Haly DSC CSC, representing the Chief of Air Force.
The Air Force Association was represented by National Secretary Peter Colliver, who laid a wreath on behalf of National President Joe Iervasi.
Reflections were given by Emily Hyles, Curator, Gallery Development, Australian War Memorial. Prayers were led by Chaplain (Squadron Leader) David Deal, Royal Australian Air Force. Impressions were delivered by Cadet Warrant Officer Joseph Modun, 334 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force Cadets. The Ode was recited by Wing Commander Peter Croce, Commanding Officer 464 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force.
Air Vice-Marshal Warren Ludwig AM (Retd), President of the Bomber Command Commemorative Day Foundation gave the thanks and farewell while Australia’s Federation Guard, the Royal Australian Air Force Band and Royal Australian Air Force Cadets participated.
The Air Force Association of Australia supports veterans of Bomber Command and their families through advocacy and commemorative activities.
