Remembering 1940: A Weekend of Commemoration in Hobart

A significant chapter in our nation’s history will be commemorated throughout the weekend of 15 to 17 September when Hobart becomes the backdrop for a memorable tribute to the Battle of Britain heroes of 1940.

Friday Evening – 15 September

Our commemorative journey begins on Friday evening 15 September, with a warm gathering at the RAAF Memorial Centre in Hobart. Join RAAFA Tasmania members from 5pm to 9pm for a Welcome Drinks reception, where members can share stories and memories.

Saturday – 16 September

On Saturday, 16 September at 2pm, RAAFA Tasmania invites you to attend a Commemorative Church Service at the magnificent St David’s Cathedral in Hobart. This solemn service will honour those who served in 1940.

In the evening, at 7pm, members will again come together for a Formal RAAF Dining In Night. This event will be held at the Ubet Function Centre, just north of the city, promising an evening of camaraderie and reflection.

Sunday – September 17th

Sunday, 17 September will witness a poignant Wreath Laying Service at the Hobart Cenotaph, commencing at 10:45am. Following this meaningful tribute, members will gather for a BBQ Lunch at the RAAF Memorial Centre, providing an opportunity to share stories and memories with fellow attendees.

RAAFA Tasmania is honoured to announce that the Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Rob Chipman AM, CSC, will be in attendance throughout the weekend, underlining the significance of these events. The Governor of Tasmania, Her Excellency the Hon Barbara Baker AC, will be present at the Church Service and the Wreath Laying.

In a display of international solidarity, Defence Attaches from the countries that participated in the 1940 battle will also be present. Additionally, a P3 Orion aircraft with 20 members from 10 Squadron, the Roulettes, and representatives from 79 Squadron, No 29 (City of Hobart) Squadron, and other mainland units will join the event.
