BATTLE OF BRITAIN ‘LACE’
A two-week, 2,018-kilometre scooter ride through the Queensland heartland is set to kick off in August, and organisers are calling for riders and supporters to join the adventure.
The annual Scootaville Queensland run departs Chermside, Brisbane, on Sunday 16 August, winding through Toowoomba, Dalby, Roma, Injune, Emerald, Biloela, Tannum Sands, Bundaberg and Kingaroy before returning to Brisbane on 29 August.
Participants are invited to gather from Thursday 14 August at the historic complex beside the Kedron Wavell Club in Chermside, where they will receive their event gear ahead of the Sunday morning send-off — including a traditional guard of honour along Kittyhawk Drive.
This year’s run, raising money for homeless veterans through the Air Force Association and Legacy, supporting families of veterans, comes with a new twist: Griffith University’s Film School has connected organisers with a graduate filmmaker who will accompany the convoy for the entire fortnight, shooting and editing footage each day and uploading highlights to the event’s social media channels. At the journey’s end, he will cut the material into a 30-minute documentary earmarked for broadcast on free-to-air television.
You don’t have to ride to come along. Participants who hold a motorcycle licence are welcome to take the handlebars of one of the scooters, but supporters are equally encouraged to join as non-riders. “Either way, it will be a two-week event you’ll remember for a long time,” said organiser Trev Benneworth.
Because the route includes an overnight stay on an Army base — and a requested tour of the Oakey Army Base — participants will need to supply a copy of their driver’s licence. Details on that will follow closer to the event.
Those interested in signing up can register at radschool.org.au/Scootaville/Participants/ScootavilleParticipants.htm. No payment is required at this stage — invoices will be sent later.
