Townsville’s Ted Mildren Honoured as 2025 Citizen of the Year

BATTLE OF BRITAIN ‘LACE’

Townsville has proudly recognised the tireless dedication and leadership of Edmund ‘Ted’ Mildren during the 2025 Australia Day Awards, where he was named Citizen of the Year.

Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney, in the presence of Queensland Governor Janette Young and Premier David Crisafulli, presented the award, highlighting Ted’s outstanding contributions to the Air Force Association and its members, saying, “As a proud garrison city, it was a real honour to present this award to Ted, who has made an incredible difference to the lives of Air Force personnel and their families.”

A founding member of the Townsville Branch of the RAAF Association since its inception in 1990, Ted has devoted 34 years of continuous service to the organisation. Over the years, he has held numerous key leadership roles, including:

  • Townsville Branch President (1995–2000)
  • Branch Secretary/Treasurer (2013–2019)and continuing as Treasurer
  • NQ Area Vice President (2013–2020)
  • Division President (2020–2024)
  • Interim Branch Welfare Officer (since May 2024)

Ted’s commitment to the Association and the veteran community is evident in his extensive service in both honorary and executive roles, far exceeding expectations. He has represented the organisation on numerous veteran and ex-service organisation committees, participated in commemorative events and served as a respected leader at the local, state and national levels.

Doug Millican also made a valuable contribution to the 2025 Australia Day celebrations as the Australia Day Ambassador at Goondiwindi. Doug travelled from Townsville to the Goondiwindi Regional Council event, where he was warmly welcomed by Mayor Lawrence Springborg AM. As the keynote speaker, Doug played a central role in the ceremony, assisting with the awards presentation before returning to Townsville.

Doug reflected on Ted’s legacy, saying, “Ted’s dedication exemplifies the highest values of the Association. His leadership and advocacy have been vital for our members.”

Ted Mildren’s recognition as Citizen of the Year is a testament to his decades of exemplary service, marking him as a true leader and advocate for the Air Force and Townsville community. Both Ted’s and Doug’s contributions highlight the spirit of dedication and service that make the Townsville and veteran communities so strong.
