Veteran’s Life Transformed by Assistance Dog

BATTLE OF BRITAIN ‘LACE’

A year after receiving his assistance dog Twix, sponsored by the Air Force Association NSW (RAAFA-NSW), veteran Ian has reclaimed his life in ways he never thought possible.

The Defence Community Dogs (DCD) program, supported by RAAFA-NSW’s generosity, paired Ian with Twix, sparking a journey of resilience and reconnection.

“Twix has been my constant companion, giving me the confidence to reconnect with my community and even close family members after more than 20 years apart,” Ian shared in a heartfelt letter.

Within six months, he and Twix earned Guide Hearing and Assistance Dog (GHAD) accreditation, a milestone that fuelled further triumphs.

“Buying my first home was a huge milestone for me,” he said, reflecting on the pride of homeownership.

Ian’s year brimmed with firsts.

“From catching a train for the first time since 1979 to exploring Sydney’s Circular Quay, every step has been a breakthrough,” he said.

He attended the ANZAC Day service at Newcastle’s Christ Church Cathedral, represented DCD at the RAAF Richmond Airshow and shared his story in a podcast about veterans and PTSD. Locally, Ian joined the State Emergency Service, became Second Vice President at Medowie RSL and returned to martial arts, a passion from his 2000 World Games days.

“This program didn’t just change my life. It gave me my life back. And for that, my children and I will always be grateful,” Ian said.

Leanne Kyle, DCD Managing Director, praised RAAFA-NSW’s role: “We thank you again for your generosity and support, genuinely improving and saving the lives of veterans, one paw at a time.”
